“N.B. This may not be the most ideal solution for everyone. You should always check in with your local council for your area’s rules and regulations regarding how you are able to set up your birds watering system.”
Best Water Troughs for Ducks and Geese
Many people ask me what I use for water troughs… Although we have the Taj Mahal of ponds to the left of this text we also use a number of different systems here on ‘The Ridge’ that may be of interest to you. Below are some photos of the various ones we use with some information of where the different sizes and concepts come in handy. I find it more important to have a smaller more manageable trough and supply my birds with fresh water on a daily basis instead of having a large trough refilling less regularly, allowing the water to potentially go stagnate. All troughs need to have ball cocks so that birds are never without water.
Medium Size Water Troughs
This trough is medium sized making it manageable for emptying. The water drains into a centralised drainage system which then recycles it into our farm’s orchard.
I recommend these as the larger ones start to become too hard to empty.
Below is a different concept to allow water to be fed through to a specific area. You can dig your trench out to the desired width and direct its drainage into the desired location. Once at the stage in this photo all you have to do is fill it with course gravel and place water trough on top. This specific trough area will be watering the Willow tree I have planted. If you choose to distribute your water through ag lines it will service a large area of grass.
N.B. Photo taken at half way to due rain delay on the works.
This trough has a 2 tap system, one at the base to empty the trough and the second at the top presenting as an overflow tap. You can connect a hose to this over flow to water specific areas. The idea is when the birds hop into the trough instead of overflowing on the surrounding ground the water can be directed to a desired location minimizing unwanted muddy areas.
Once again All troughs need to be fitted with a ball cock so that your birds are never with out water, their called waterfowl for a reason.
